- Union Cabinet approved Phase 2(A) of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project
- New corridor runs 6.032 km from Koteshwar Road to the airport
- Five stations: four elevated, one underground
- Total completion cost, including interest during construction, is ₹2,169.04 crore
- Network will reach 77.63 km; about 2,000 construction jobs expected at peak
The Union Cabinet has cleared a new metro corridor that will link Ahmedabad’s airport to the city’s metro network, at a total cost of ₹2,169.04 crore. The decision was taken on Wednesday, 10 June 2026, at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
What the approval covers
The approval covers Phase 2(A) of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project. The new line starts at Koteshwar Road and runs to the airport, covering 6.032 km.
An official statement said the corridor will have five stations: Ashram Road, Koteshwar Prachin Mandir, Sabarmati River, Sardar Nagar and Airport. Four of them will be elevated and one will be underground.
Cost, network and jobs
The total completion cost, including interest during construction, is put at ₹2,169.04 crore.
Once Phase 2(A) is operational, Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar will have 77.63 km of active metro rail network.
The project is expected to create about 2,000 jobs during the peak of construction. Around 500 people are likely to work on operations and maintenance once the line is running.
Why the government says it matters
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw briefed the media on the decision.
In a post on X, Prime Minister Modi said the corridor will strengthen connectivity, especially to the airport, making travel faster and more convenient. He said it will also ease congestion, create jobs and support sustainable urban growth.
The government said the line aims to improve public transport to the airport. It will also connect homes and businesses that currently lack efficient mass transit. Faster links from Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and GIFT City to the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport will follow once the airport is built.
Sports facilities are also likely to come up near the corridor for the World Police Games 2029 and the Commonwealth Games 2030.
Background
The Yellow Line of the metro opened in stages. The last part of Phase 2 was completed in January 2026.
Separately, the Union Cabinet approved the Phase-2 project at a cost of ₹5,384.17 crore in February 2019. Phase 2(A), approved in June 2026, is a different phase.
