The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, in collaboration with the National Film Development Corporation – National Film Archive of India (NFDC-NFAI), today inaugurated the second edition of the Workshop on Archiving, Preservation & Restoration of Moving Images at the NFDC-NFAI premises in Pune.

The two-week workshop, being held from 5 to 15 October 2026, brings together 26 participants from across the country for an intensive learning experience focused on the preservation, conservation, digitisation and restoration of moving-image heritage.

Mr. Dhiraj Singh, Director, FTII, while addressing the participants, said, “We are a land of storytellers, and unlike science, in the creative world, the new does not negate the old. This makes preservation and conservation all the more important”

Mr. Prakash Magdum, Managing Director, NFDC, said, “NFAI is the heart of film preservation in the country. This workshop is about sharing knowledge and building the skills needed to preserve our vast audiovisual heritage”

Designed as a hands-on archival learning programme, the workshop introduces participants to key areas including moving-image preservation, metadata, digital preservation, film types and bases, preventive conservation, digital film restoration and audio restoration.

Participants will also undertake visits to archival and cultural institutions including FTII, NFDC-NFAI, Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute and the Reserve Bank of India Archives, providing first-hand exposure to archival spaces, collections and preservation practices.

The course is organised by the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, through its Centre for Open Learning (FTII-CFOL), in collaboration with NFDC-National Film Archive of India (NFDC-NFAI), with support from knowledge partners including Prasad Corporation, Core Heritage, Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute and Reserve Bank of India Archives, and is directed by Ms. Aparna Subramanian.

The programme will also feature a curated series of archival and restored film screenings throughout the workshop. It will conclude with the screening of the 4K restored Eight Column Affair, Sriram Raghavan’s FTII diploma film, followed by a Q&A session.

The workshop aims to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the science, practice and institutional frameworks involved in preserving moving-image heritage, while encouraging greater awareness of the need to safeguard audiovisual collections for future generations.
