More than 10,000 Gujarat revenue employees have called off their indefinite strike after a high-level meeting in Gandhinagar on 8 October.

What happened

The state-level revenue employees’ body announced that its agitation would be formally withdrawn after the meeting with the state government. The body’s president, Jamsangbhai Parmar, said the decision followed positive assurances from the government on the employees’ reasonable demands.

The government gave an assurance of sympathetic consideration and quick resolution of those demands. The meeting was chaired by Jitu Vaghani, government spokesperson and minister, and Sanjaysinh Mahida, Minister of State for Revenue. Mahida said the meeting marked a major step toward a lasting solution.

Why the strike started

The dispute covered 14 pending demands of revenue employees. About a month earlier, the federation’s office-bearers met government representatives and senior officials. Employees said they were assured the issues would be resolved within 10 days.

That did not happen. After a mass casual leave protest failed to get a positive response, an indefinite strike began on Wednesday. Around 8,000 to 10,000 Class-3 revenue employees from across the state joined it, and several essential government services came to a standstill.

Emergency services and what next

Emergency services were exempted. Vijayrajsinh Jadeja, a Revenue Talati in Gandhinagar district, said emergency services would also continue.

The government agreed to form a committee under Jayanthi Ravi to examine grade pay and other pending demands. The committee will take up the remaining issues that the employees have raised.
