  • Wind energy capacity to reach 59.20 GW by September 2026: Shri Pralhad Joshi

Union Minister of New & Renewable Energy, Education & Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution Shri Pralhad Joshi inaugurated the 8th edition of ‘Windergy India 2026’ in Chennai on October 8, 2026. The event marks the beginning of the major global wind energy conference being held from October 7 to 9, 2026. Energy Resources and Law Minister of Tamil Nadu, Shri Thiru CTR Nirmal Kumar was present at the inauguration ceremony. Senior officials of the Central Government and several state governments, representatives of wind energy associations and industry leaders were also present on the occasion.

‘Windergy India 2026’ brings together the global wind energy ecosystem on a common platform with approximately 400 exhibitors representing over 20 countries, 500 delegates and dedicated country pavilions for Denmark, Germany and Spain.

Delivering the keynote address, Union Minister Shri Pralhad Joshi highlighted the immense potential of wind energy in the country and the vast opportunities it provides. He said, “India's wind energy sector has demonstrated strong momentum, with the highest ever annual installation of 6.05 gigawatts (GW) achieved in fiscal year 2026 (FY 2026). We are confident that annual wind energy installations will surpass this record in FY 2027, marking another significant milestone in India's wind energy journey. This sustained growth will lead to 100 GW by 2030." “This will strengthen the foundation to achieve our national target of installed wind energy capacity and provide further impetus to the growth of India’s wind energy sector. With a strong project pipeline and supportive policy framework, India is well placed to sustain this momentum and achieve the scale required for the next phase of wind energy development.”

The Union Minister further said that India's wind energy sector is entering a new phase of continuous growth. With an installed capacity of 59.20 GW by September 30, 2026, India is moving strongly towards crossing the 100 GW wind power capacity mark by 2030, laying a solid foundation for global leadership in wind power production and exports.

Tamil Nadu Energy Minister Thiru CTR Nirmal Kumar underlined the state's important role in wind energy development and the proactive steps taken to promote new initiatives, such as the state's 'Repowering' policy.

Representatives from various state governments were honored for their exceptional leadership in pursuing wind energy development through resolution of land easements, timely clearances and right of way (ROW) issues. Major international and domestic agreements including IWTMA-BWE Global MoU, IWTMA-PTB Letter of Intent and IWTMA-OECD collaboration were announced to promote technological advancement in the Indian wind energy sector. Additionally, reports titled “Energy Transition in Tamil Nadu” and “Reimagining the Contractual Mechanism for the Indian Wind Energy Sector” were also released during the inauguration ceremony.

The participants were encouraged to use ‘Windergy India 2026’ as a dynamic platform for meaningful collaboration, technology exchange and new partnerships. The sheer scope of India's wind energy ambitions requires collective efforts from government, industry, academia, research institutions and international partners. Together, India can strengthen the entire wind energy value chain, accelerate innovation and deployment, and further strengthen our position as a leading global hub for wind energy.
