Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, Dr. L. Murugan today participated in various activities organized under the Swachhta Hi Seva campaign at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), New Delhi.

Addressing the students, officers and staff, Dr. L. Murugan reminded that Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi had launched the Swachh Bharat Mission in 2014 with the aim of making cleanliness a mass movement.

Dr. Murugan said, "After Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi launched the cleanliness drive in 2014, people across the country became a part of this movement. Cleanliness drives were also conducted in offices and institutions. Today, along with the students and officials at IIMC, we have taken the cleanliness pledge. We should contribute through cleanliness service wherever possible, including Anganwadi centres, temples, institutions and other public places. We are carrying forward the cleanliness drive from September 17 onwards. It is our collective responsibility to keep the country, institutions and offices clean.”

The program began with the cleanliness pledge at the institute, which was participated by faculty members, officers, staff, students and trainees of the Indian Information Service (IIS).

Dr. Murugan also participated in the ‘One Tree in the Name of Mother’ initiative by planting a sapling on the IIMC campus. He interacted with the students and stressed the importance of not only planting trees but also ensuring their constant care and maintenance.

As part of the programme, Dr Murugan along with students, faculty members, officers and staff volunteered for an hour at IIMC. The activity included clearing garbage and construction material from the area as part of the cleanliness drive.

During this, Dr. Murugan also inspected the newly constructed classrooms and other educational and infrastructure facilities, including teaching blocks, under-construction hostels and renovated libraries. He interacted with students from different states and departments of the institute.

Dr. Murugan appreciated the initiatives being taken by IIMC under the leadership of the Institute, especially in the areas of cleanliness, environmental awareness, campus development and student participation.

During the program, IIMC Vice Chancellor Dr. Pragya Paliwal Gaur, Registrar and DG Training Shri L. Madhu Nag and Senior Economic Advisor Shri R.K. Jena along with faculty members, officers, staff, students and officer trainees of the institute were present.

The event was part of IIMC's activities under the Swachhta Hi Seva campaign, which aims to encourage mass participation in cleanliness, environment conservation and responsible citizenship.
