- Over 1,54,000 people trained in additive manufacturing-related skills
- 56 additive manufacturing start-ups supported under the national strategy
- 65 India-specific AM technologies developed through national centres
- Army's first 3D-printed two-storey dwelling built in 12 weeks at Ahmedabad
- NSAM 2.0 phase planned to accelerate growth and commercialisation
India’s Army has built its first 3D-printed two-storey dwelling unit at Ahmedabad, and it took just 12 weeks. The project is a showcase for additive manufacturing, a technology that the government is backing with a national strategy.
Progress under the national strategy
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) released the National Strategy for Additive Manufacturing (NSAM) in February 2022. The strategy is now moving into its second phase, NSAM 2.0.
Since launch, the strategy has trained more than 1,54,000 people in AM-related skills. It has supported 56 AM start-ups. The national centres have helped develop 65 India-specific technologies, covering materials, machines, design and printed products.
These capabilities are being used in aerospace, medical devices, electronics, energy, food processing and photonics.
Targets and what comes next
The original strategy aims to capture 5% of the global additive manufacturing market. It also targets adding nearly US$1 billion to India’s GDP.
Other targets include 50 India-specific AM technologies, 100 new AM start-ups, 500 new products and 1 lakh skilled workers. It also aims to build AM capability across 10 existing and emerging manufacturing sectors.
NSAM 2.0 plans to speed up intellectual property generation and make machines and materials more affordable through clusters. It also proposes to expand the start-up base, support Indian defence and deepen international cooperation.
Sectors and market outlook
The global AM machines market is projected to reach USD 149 billion by 2035. The AM-electronics supply chain is expected to grow from USD 18 billion to USD 112 billion.
In space, Agnikul Cosmos launched Agnibaan – SOrTeD in May 2024, with a single-piece, AM-printed semi-cryogenic rocket engine. In healthcare, startups are developing printed implants and bone grafts.
Upcoming events include the second National Additive Manufacturing Symposium (NAMS), held on 13 March 2026 in New Delhi. The second edition of the Emerging Science, Technology and Innovation Conclave (ESTIC-2026) will be held from 27 to 29 October 2026 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, organised by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
