Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw today said that a consultation paper on the future regulation of Artificial Intelligence will be floated within the next month.

Speaking to media after releasing the World Development Report 2026-The Promise of Artificial Intelligence, Mr Vaishnaw said that the proposed consultation paper will focus on AI safety, cybersecurity, benefits and potential harms. He said that it will also address the need to ensure that AI benefits reach all sections of society while protecting people from harmful applications such as deepfakes.

On the report, Mr Vaishnaw said that an extensive study has been undertaken in collaboration with the World Bank to explore ways of ensuring that sections of society traditionally deprived of technology can also benefit from AI.

Mr. Vaishnaw said the wider use of AI in sectors such as agriculture, healthcare and education will help society reap greater benefits from the technology. The Minister said this approach is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of democratising technology.

Addressing the event, Mr Vaishnaw said that the government is committed to make artificial intelligence accessible to a broad spectrum of startups, academia, researchers, and students. He said India is now among the countries that have adopted and used AI to get real benefits. The Minister said that real benefits come from the actual use of technology to enhance productivity, reduce costs, increase revenues and improve people’s lives. He said the new technology will also create significant opportunities for small and medium enterprises.
