Why World Post Day is observed

World Post Day aims to create awareness of the role of the Postal Department in daily life and in the contribution of postal services to global, social and economic development. Yadav, who has written the book ‘India Post: 150 Glorious Years’, said the week will also push revenue growth through wider promotion of postal services.

The Universal Postal Union was established in Bern, Switzerland, on October 9, 1874, with the aim of building a uniform postal system worldwide. India became the first Asian nation to join the UPU on July 1, 1876. In 1969, the UPU Congress in Tokyo, Japan, officially declared October 9 as World Post Day.
