  • India has 40 supercomputers with a combined capacity of 68 PF, as of September 2026
  • The National Supercomputing Mission plans 50 systems with a cumulative capacity above 123 PF
  • NSM infrastructure has supported over 16,000 researchers across more than 400 institutions
  • Indigenous Rudra servers, cooling technology and interconnects are being built under the Mission
  • Flood early warning system forecasts floods up to 2 days in advance for the Mahanadi basin

India has 40 supercomputers with a combined capacity of 68 PF, as of September 2026. The National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) now plans to take that to 50 systems.

The Mission was launched in April 2015 with an outlay of about ₹4,500 crore. The Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) jointly steer it. The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune, and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, implement it.

Capacity and plans

Of the 40 systems, 13 are high-end machines above 1 PF. Another 12 are mid-range, and 15 are smaller systems.

CategoryNumber of systemsCapacity
High-end13Above 1 PF
Mid-range12Between 500 TF and 1 PF
Smaller15Below 500 TF

The machines have been built locally and commissioned across the country. NSM plans 50 systems in total, with a cumulative capacity above 123 PF, spread across academic and research institutions.

Research reach and skills

NSM infrastructure has supported over 16,000 researchers, including more than 2,900 PhD scholars. The users come from over 400 institutions.

The systems have run more than 1.5 crore compute jobs and contributed to over 1,990 research publications, as of September 2026.

The Mission also runs training for students and faculty. These include awareness workshops, hackathons and bootcamps, and faculty programmes with the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Other offerings are an annual EduHPC workshop, an NPTEL course on the SWAYAM platform, and the HPC Shiksha Portal.

Indigenous components and applications

NSM has developed its own Rudra servers, with C-DAC designing them and Electronics Manufacturing Services partners making them. As of September 2026, 6,000 Rudra servers were deployed in PARAM Rudra supercomputers, and 1,500 more were under manufacturing.

The Mission has also tested a high-speed interconnect network at 100 Gbps and 200 Gbps. Indigenous cooling technology is now in the deployment stage. PARAM Shavak, a supercomputer in a box, is meant for engineering colleges and universities.

NSM applications include a drug discovery platform, which was used during COVID-19, and a flood early warning system for river basins. A forest fire spread model has been tested in the Sikkim Himalayas.
