  • Telecom licences granted to three Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite services providers
  • Licensees must show compliance with security conditions under licence terms
  • Security assessment under way for all three licensees
  • Spectrum assignment is the next step, only after security clearance
  • All three entities are at broadly the same regulatory stage

The government has rejected claims that its rules for satellite communication services are unfair. Claims circulating on social media suggest the framework is applied in a discriminatory way.

Three licences granted

The government says it has put in place a fair and non-discriminatory authorisation framework for all telecommunication services, including satellite services. Under it, three Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite services have been granted telecom licences. These are based on non-geosynchronous satellite orbit communications.

Security checks under way

Each licensee must show it meets security conditions set out in the licence terms. These conditions aim to ensure services meet security requirements, protecting users and their data.

A security assessment is currently under way for all three licensees.

Spectrum only after clearance

A licensee that completes the assessment may move to the next step and seek spectrum assignment. All three entities are at broadly the same regulatory stage at present.

The government called the suggestion that the framework or its application is unfair or discriminatory baseless and misconceived.
