Part of the dome at Kirtidan Gadhvi’s ‘Parampara Navratri’ garba event in Ahmedabad collapsed on 9 October, ahead of its 11 October start.
What happened
The large air-conditioned dome suddenly sank while preparations were under way. The rear part of the dome came down with a loud noise during finishing work.
The PI of Sarkhej police station estimated the collapsed section at 300-400 square feet. Organisers and police reached the spot immediately and began an inspection.
Cause and safety concerns
The pillars had moved from their foundations as the weight of lighting and fabrication increased. The collapse has been attributed to weak pillars.
Work was reportedly going on without a fire NOC. The ground has a capacity of 12,000 people.
No injuries, police say
The Sarkhej police station PI said no one was killed or injured in the incident.
Event details
The event is a premium, fully air-conditioned garba dome. Ticketing listings show it scheduled from Sunday, 11 October to Tuesday, 20 October, at 10 PM, at Gheljipura, Sardar Patel Ring Road, Makarba.
The event’s own website says the dome covers 900,000 square feet. That is the organiser’s own figure.
The schedule starting 11 October may be disrupted after the incident.
