Cochin Shipyard Limited has cut steel for three battery-electric tugs for Svitzer A/S. The ceremony was held in Cochin on October 7, 2026.

Ceremony and attendees

Jens Ove Kymler Rasmussen, New Building Site Manager of Svitzer, started the steel cutting. Dr. Harikrishnan S (Director – Operations), Harikumar A (CEO, UCSL) and Shiraz V.P. (Executive Director – Shipbuilding) attended, along with other senior officials from CSL. Representatives of the classification society ABS were also present.

Part of a wider partnership

The work follows a shipbuilding agreement signed last year for four next-generation battery-electric TRAnsverse 2600e tugs. These tugs are built for close-quarter work and can serve many vessel types and sizes. They can also operate in rough weather and tidal conditions.

Powered by batteries, the vessels produce zero direct emissions during port and terminal towage when charged with green power.

Order book and green shipbuilding

Jose V J, Chairman and Managing Director of CSL, said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to innovation and greener maritime operations. He said CSL is contributing to decarbonisation of the maritime sector.

CSL is also constructing two GTTP tugs under the Government of India’s Green Tug Transition Programme. The company’s current order book includes 17 ASTDS tugs and 6 green tugs.
