Steel prices rose sharply in September 2026, with TMT (10 mm) bars up 12.6% month on month to ₹65,298 a tonne. Output and demand also grew, according to provisional data for the month.
Output grows, led by crude steel
India produced 14.1 Mt of crude steel in September 2026, against 13.7 Mt a year earlier. That is a rise of 3.4%. For April to September, crude steel output reached 85.1 Mt, up 2.9%.

Finished steel output was 13.5 Mt in September, up 1.9%. The top seven producers accounted for 47.7 Mt of crude steel in April to September. The public sector share of crude steel output was 15.5%.
Demand rises and prices climb
Finished steel consumption reached 14.4 Mt in September, up 8.0% from 13.3 Mt a year earlier. For April to September, consumption was 84.9 Mt, up 7.5%.
Prices rose across all four tracked products in September, compared with August:
- TMT (10 mm): ₹65,298 a tonne, up 12.6% month on month and 21.0% year on year
- HR Coil (2 mm): ₹76,085 a tonne, up 8.0% and 26.8%
- CR Coil (0.63 mm): ₹84,972 a tonne, up 11.1% and 28.8%
- GP Sheet (0.63 mm): ₹94,148 a tonne, up 8.6% and 27.7%
The prices are inclusive of GST and are averages from Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai.
Imports outpace exports
Finished steel imports were 654.4 thousand tonnes in September, almost flat on a year earlier. For April to September, imports rose 23.8% to 4141.8 thousand tonnes. Their value reached Rs 43690.1 crore, up 40.0%.
Exports fell 3.8% in September to 561.8 thousand tonnes. For April to September, exports rose 26.2% to 3547.8 thousand tonnes, worth Rs 28263.7 crore. India was a net importer of finished steel by quantity in April to September 2026.
Raw material costs and policy moves
Scrap HMS II rose 9.6% month on month to ₹43,810 a tonne in September. NMDC Iron Ore Baila Lump rose 2.9% to ₹5,400 a tonne.
The Ministry of Steel has decided to set up a Steel Industry Safety Council (SISC). It will be chaired by the Secretary, Ministry of Steel, and will work to improve safety standards across the industry. A Steel Industry Safety Directorate (SISD) will support the council through safety audits and investigation of serious incidents.
NMDC commissioned a 2 MTPA pellet plant at Nagarnar, Chhattisgarh. The project cost ₹5,427 crore. NMDC’s iron ore output rose 8% year on year to 4.04 Mt in September, taking April to September production to 27.3 Mt.
Under the Green Steel Initiative, 101 steel producers have received Green Steel Certificates. Most certified products carry 5-star ratings. A ₹8.18-crore green hydrogen research centre is being set up by Jadavpur University with SAIL, DVC and HURL.
