  • 7.116 kg amphetamine found in a Mahindra Thar's spare tyre near Indore
  • 4.9 kg cocaine hidden in chocolate tubes at Hyderabad airport

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 15.59 kg of amphetamine, cocaine and heroin in three operations on 29 and 30 September 2026, arresting five people.

The agency said the seizures are part of its continuing crackdown on illicit drug trafficking. All five arrests were made under the NDPS Act, 1985.

Amphetamine hidden in Thar’s spare tyre

On 30 September 2026, DRI and the Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN) intercepted a Mahindra Thar suspected of carrying amphetamine at the Ujjain–Dewas Toll Plaza in Madhya Pradesh. The driver broke through a barricade after being signalled to stop.

Officers chased the vehicle for about 1.5 hours and caught it near Bicholi Mardana, Indore. The drugs were hidden inside the spare (stepney) tyre on the rear door.

The tyre held 21 packets with 7.116 kg (gross) of whitish-yellow crystalline substance. A NDPS Field Test Kit showed it was amphetamine. The drug and the vehicle were seized, and all three occupants were arrested.

Cocaine in chocolate tubes at Hyderabad airport

On 29 September 2026, DRI stopped an Indian passenger arriving from Doha at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad, acting on specific intelligence about cocaine smuggling.

His cabin baggage had seven chocolate tubes that were heavier than their marked weight. Officers found 207 light-yellow oval capsules hidden inside the tubes along with the chocolates.

The capsules held a white powder that tested positive for cocaine in a Narcotic Drug Detection Kit. In all, 4.9 kg (gross) of cocaine was seized and the passenger was arrested.

Heroin seized in rental taxi near Phillaur

On 29 September 2026, DRI officers ran surveillance near Phillaur on the outskirts of Jalandhar, Punjab. They checked several vehicles near the bridge over the Sutlej river.

The suspect was found travelling as a passenger in a rental car-pooling taxi. Officers found three packets inside a blue backpack on his lap, each holding two smaller packets.

A field test kit showed the substance was heroin. In total, 3.574 kg of heroin was seized and the man was arrested.

DRI said the three operations show its intelligence-led approach to detecting different trafficking routes and concealment methods. It said it remains committed to disrupting organised drug-trafficking networks across the country.
