  • Over 60,000 schools took part in the nationwide screening
  • More than 72 lakh teachers have already been sensitised
  • The module is available in 12 Indian languages
  • PRASHAST helps teachers flag children with probable disabilities
  • Special educators verify cases and arrange medical assessment where needed

Over 60,000 schools across India have taken part in a nationwide screening of a 30-minute module on inclusive education for children with special needs (CwSN). The Department of School Education and Literacy under the Ministry of Education ran the drive through the PRASHAST Portal.

Who the module is for

The module aims to make inclusion a responsibility of the whole school. It targets heads of schools, teachers, special educators and non-teaching staff, including aayahs, drivers, clerks, receptionists, deans and wardens.

It uses real-life examples and interactive activities to show staff how to behave respectfully and appropriately with CwSN. The content is available in 12 Indian languages.

Teacher training so far

For the past three months, the department has been sensitising general teachers on inclusive education through PRASHAST. More than 72 lakh teachers have already completed the module.

The ministry says participation is likely to rise further this month.

How the PRASHAST screening works

PRASHAST is a digital tool used inside schools. It helps identify children who may have disability conditions covered under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016.

Teachers use a two-part checklist to screen students based on visible signs. Special educators then check the cases and refer children for medical assessment where needed.

The ministry says inclusion depends on every part of school life, from classrooms and offices to buses and common areas. The drive supports the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020, and the RPwD Act, 2016.
