Gandhinagar goes to the polls on Sunday, 11 October, to elect 44 corporators across 11 wards. Voting runs from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Polling and counting dates

The Gujarat State Election Commission (SEC) has fixed the polling date for the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC) and by-polls. Voting will be held using electronic voting machines (EVMs).

A re-poll, if needed, is set for 12 October. Counting of votes is scheduled for 13 October.

On polling duty, the SEC clarified that polling staff remain on election duty until they return the election material. This may run into the day after polling.

Candidates in the fray

Nominations closed on 26 September, and the last date for withdrawals was 29 September.

A total of 203 nominations were filed across the 11 wards. Scrutiny rejected 65 of them, most of them party dummy candidates. That left 138 valid nominations.

Other civic polls on the same day

General elections for the Okha Nagarpalika in Devbhumi Dwarka district and the Thara Nagarpalika in Banaskantha district are also on 11 October.

Bye-elections to seven vacant seats in various local bodies are being held alongside.

Background

The GMC election was announced on 16 September 2026. The model code of conduct came into force across the civic body’s area from that date.

The previous GMC election was held in October 2021. The BJP won 41 of the 44 seats in that poll.

The statewide local body polls held on 26 April 2026 did not cover Gandhinagar. The GMC polls were kept for a later date.

Congress outlines its campaign

Congress leader Tushar Chaudhary said the party will reach the people of Gandhinagar with its 10-point programme. He said the party will act on citizens’ questions after hearing them.
