More than 10,000 revenue employees across Gujarat have called off their indefinite strike after talks with the state government in Gandhinagar.

What happened

After a high-level meeting with the state government in Gandhinagar, the federation officially announced that the agitation was being withdrawn. The strike was called off following assurances from the state government.

Revenue employees in Gandhinagar had also joined the statewide agitation. Election-related duties were kept outside the strike because municipal election work is currently underway.

Why staff went on strike

Revenue employees had 14 pending demands. These include promotion, transfer, fixed pay, seniority and job chart issues.

Staff demanded that the seniority list be finalised immediately. They also asked that work belonging to other departments be removed from the revenue talatis’ job chart.

The job chart issue predates the strike. The government had brought a new job chart for revenue talatis after 14 years, and talatis complained of heavy workload. The Panchayat department minister later announced that the work of revenue talatis and talati-cum-mantris had been officially separated. Under a new Revenue Department resolution, separate job charts were set for both cadres.

Ramesh Patel, president of the Vadodara Revenue Employees’ Association, said the demands included restoring departmental tasks recently added to revenue talatis’ responsibilities and revising seniority lists. He said the employees had started an indefinite strike because their demands remained unresolved despite the 30-day period.

Services hit

The strike affected income and caste certificates, widow assistance applications, inheritance registrations, land document processing and e-Dhara operations.

Vijayrajsinh Jadeja, a Revenue Talati in Gandhinagar district, said emergency services would also continue during the strike.

What next

The state government said it had taken a positive approach to the employees’ demands. It assured that all reasonable demands would be resolved quickly and promised to address the issues at the earliest.
