Who is behind the programme
The National Institute of Social Defence (NISD), under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, is organising the programme. It is working with the Office of the Collector, Diu, in the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.
Joint Secretaries Dr Sandeep R Rathod and Sajeesh Kumar N attended the inaugural session, along with NISD Director Gaurav Singh Rajawat. Collector Rahul Dev Boora welcomed the dignitaries and participants.
Training for frontline workers
Pant said the programme will build a pool of trained, sensitised workers. They will provide basic geriatric care, spot emerging care needs and help seniors reach government schemes.
About 50 Anganwadi workers, frontline workers and grassroots functionaries in Diu District are expected to complete the training. The course has been tailored to the needs of senior citizens in Diu, with a focus on local support.
The syllabus covers ageing, daily living support, nutrition, medication help, fall prevention and home safety. It also includes first aid, psychosocial support, loneliness, dementia awareness and the prevention of neglect and abuse.
Practical sessions and pledge
The course will mix lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises and case studies. Participants will also get hands-on exposure to basic caregiving techniques.
Pant administered the Pledge for Welfare of Senior Citizens to the participants. Ms Asha Sharma, Course Coordinator, and Ms Ritu Dandriyal, Junior Consultant, from the Senior Citizen Division of NISD, are conducting the sessions.
