Indian Coast Guard conducted the 12th National Maritime Search and Rescue Exercise (SAREX-2026) under the supervision of National Maritime Search and Rescue Board (NMSARB) off Paradip, Odisha on 8 October 2026. Maritime and air agencies participated in the exercise organized on the theme “Use of Technology to Enhance Search and Rescue Preparedness and Maritime Security”. Its objective was to demonstrate operational preparedness, mutual coordination and joint action capability for large-scale rescue operations at sea.
The exercise was observed by Parmesh Shivamani, Director General, Indian Coast Guard. It was participated by Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force, Shipping Corporation of India, Directorate General of Shipping, Department of Fisheries, Customs Department, Marine Police, Paradip Port Authority and Odisha State Administration. 32 observers from 30 countries also participated in the exercise. This was an important step towards expanding international cooperation in maritime search and rescue operations. Their participation promoted exchange of best practices, coordination between different agencies and the ability to work jointly. Also, India's role as a reliable partner in the field of maritime search and rescue was further strengthened.
The exercise involved 15 ships of the Indian Coast Guard, three Dornier aircraft, three Advanced Light Helicopters, one Chetak helicopter, C-130J and Mi-17 aircraft of the Indian Air Force, two ships of the Indian Navy, as well as civilian and state government resources and shore support units. During the exercise, a large scale rescue operation was practiced following a combined air and sea distress situation. Under the scenario, a passenger plane carrying 228 passengers landed in the sea near Paradip port and its main structure, called the fuselage, collided with a container ship named MV Jumba. This caused structural damage to the ship and caught fire. Activation of incident control centre, fire extinguishing operations, evacuation by helicopter, deployment of lifeboats and air-dropped life-saving equipment, Jason Cradle and Gemini recovery, rescue basket operation and rescue net procedures were practiced in the exercise. Additionally, the capability of a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) was also demonstrated.
SAREX-2026 reiterated the collective resolve of India and its international partners to develop faster, technology-enabled and well-coordinated search and rescue systems in line with the SAGAR vision and spirit of the ocean. This exercise further reinforced the principle that a coordinated and prompt response to any distress call should be ensured and every possible effort should be made to save lives at sea.
