  • In an 8-week study, the problem of bed wetting improved by about 70 percent with the combination of yoga and Ayurvedic medicine.
  • Improvement in memory, concentration and behavioral parameters was also observed in the combined treatment group.

A combination of Ayurvedic medicine and yoga has shown encouraging results in the management of unintentional bed-wetting during sleep, called ‘shayyamutra’ in Ayurveda, in children. A clinical study conducted at the Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda (ITRA), Jamnagar, an institute of national importance under the Ministry of AYUSH, found that children doing regular yoga asanas along with Ayurvedic medicine showed greater improvement in the frequency of bed-wetting compared to children taking only Ayurvedic medicine.

The study, conducted by ITRA's virginity department, involved around 38 children aged between 6 to 14 years and was studied for 8 weeks. The children were divided into two groups.

The first group was given 'Medhya Rasayan Churna', which was a mixture of Brahmi, Shankhpushpi, Mulethi and Giloy. The second group was given four simple yoga asanas—Utkatasana, Ardha Shalabhasana, Bhujangasana and Shavasana—practiced in the morning and evening along with the same Ayurvedic medicine.

Study Of Chief conclusion

  • The group taking Ayurvedic medicine alone showed approximately 38 percent improvement in the frequency of bed-wetting, while the group taking Ayurvedic medicine along with yoga showed approximately 70 percent improvement.
  • The children who received the combined treatment had about a 61 percent improvement in memory, compared to about 31 percent in the group taking the drug alone.
  • There was about a 66 percent reduction in irritability in the combined treatment group.
  • About 71 percent reduction in hyperactivity was seen in children who practiced yoga regularly. The study also noted improvements in concentration and morale.

The findings of the study have come to light through a research paper published in the prestigious AYU Journal. Research paper by Prof. Presented by Vaidya Virendra Kori, Vaidya Sagar Bhinde and Vaidya Ameesha Bawarwa. The researchers analyzed the data obtained during the study and presented its findings.

ITRA Director Prof. Dr. Tanuja Nesri said that the problem of bed wetting during sleep in children can be related to many factors and it can also affect their self-confidence and behavior. He said that in the study, the combined use of Ayurvedic medicine and Yogasana showed encouraging improvement in the problem of bed-wetting as well as in memory, concentration and behavioral parameters.

The study also indicated that practicing yoga can help in improving pelvic muscles and physical-mental coordination. At the same time, some of the components included in the Ayurvedic medicine used in the study have traditionally been considered to be related to mental peace and cognitive health.

This study highlights the potential of an integrated approach of Ayurveda and Yoga in the management of bed wetting in children. However, it is necessary to consult a qualified doctor before adopting any medicine or yoga practice for the treatment of this problem in children.
