For millions of commuters, better connectivity is not just about how many kilometers of road are built, but also how many hours are saved in travel. Across India, new bridges, tunnels, expressways and rail services are transforming travel times between cities, regions and communities. These projects are clearly demonstrating the transformation that infrastructure is bringing to everyday travel, by replacing long detours, difficult routes and slow routes with direct and faster connections. As faster links reach more parts of the country, distance is no longer a major barrier to everyday movement.

Bridge: obstacles away, Travel Of Time Less

Bridges are eliminating the long and slow time spent crossing rivers from everyday travel and journeys that previously took hours are now being completed in much less time.

  • Bhupen Hazarika bridge/Dhola–Sadiya Bridge, Assam–Arunachal State (May, 2017)

6 hours → 1 hour

The travel time between Rupi in Assam and Meka/Roing in Arunachal Pradesh has reduced from six hours to one hour, thereby five hours Has been saved.

  • bogibeel Bridge, Assam (December, 2018)

Full day trip → 1-2 hours

The rail-cum-road bridge over the Brahmaputra has transformed the connectivity between Dhemaji and Dibrugarh. Trips that previously took almost an entire day now take about one to two hours.

  • adamant bridge, Maharashtra (January, 2024)

2 hours → 20 minutes

The Mumbai Trans Harbor Link provides direct connection between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, reducing travel time to about 20 minutes.

  • Kosi Rail Mahasetu, Bihar (september, 2020)

8 hours → 30 minutes

Kosi Rail Mahasetu has reduced the train travel time between Nirmali and Saraigarh from about eight hours to 30 minutes. Along with this, it has also reduced the distance from about 300 km to 22 km.

Tunnels provide the shortest route through the most difficult areas of India. By avoiding mountains, winding roads and dangerous routes, they reduce travel time and make travel easier.

  • adamant tunnel, Himachal State (october, 2020)

4–5 hours savings

This tunnel is 9.02 km long which passes through the Rohtang Pass and bridges the distance between Manali-Sarchu. 46 kilometers Reduces. This provides all-season connectivity to Lahaul-Spiti.

  • Dr. Shyama Offering Mukherjee tunnel, Jammu–kashmir (april, 2017)

saving about 2 hours

This tunnel is 9 kilometers long which passes through difficult routes, making the travel distance approximately 30 kilometers Reduces. It reduces the travel time between Jammu-Srinagar by about two hours.

  • Banihal–Qazigund road tunnel, Jammu–kashmir (april, 2022)

~1.5 hours savings

This twin-tube tunnel is 8.45 kilometers long which covers the distance of road 16 kilometers Reduces. This reduces the travel time by about one and a half hours.

Reduction in travel time by more than 1 hour

Built at an altitude of approximately 13,000 feet, this tunnel ensures all-weather connectivity on the strategically important Tezpur-Tawang route.

expressway And economic corridor

Expressways are changing the pace of travel between cities through shorter routes, controlled access and faster speeds. Long journeys that used to take several hours have now turned into much quicker road trips.

  • Delhi–meerut expressway (2021)

2.5 hours → 50 minutes

The 82 km long project has reduced the travel time between Delhi and Meerut from about two and a half hours to about 50 minutes.

  • Bengaluru–Mysuru expressway (march, 2023)

3 hours → 75 minutes

The 118-km expressway has reduced the travel time between Bengaluru and Mysuru from about three hours to about 75 minutes.

  • Delhi–Dehradun economic corridor (april, 2026)

6 hours → 2.5 hours

This 213 km long access-controlled corridor reduces the travel time between Delhi and Dehradun from more than six hours to about two and a half hours.  

  • Mumbai–Nagpur Prosperity highway (December, 2022)

16 hours → ~8 hours

The 701 km long access-controlled expressway has significantly reduced the travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur.

  • Ahmedabad–Dholera expressway (march, 2026)

Ahmedabad-Dholera: 100 km & 2 hrs 15 mins → 83 km & 45 mins

Ahmedabad to Bhavnagar: 169 km & 3 hrs 15 mins → 141 km & 1 hrs 45 mins

This 109 km long access-controlled greenfield expressway provides high-speed connectivity between Ahmedabad and Dholera.

  • Delhi–Amritsar–area expressway (First phase – july, 2026)

Delhi–Amritsar: 8 hours → 4 hours

Delhi–Katra: 14 hours → 6 hours

This expressway is being developed to boost the movement of pilgrims and tourists visiting Shri Mata Vaishno Devi and to give impetus to industrial and logistics development along this corridor.

  • Delhi–Mumbai expressway

33 hours → ~12 hours

This greenfield expressway is being built to reduce the travel time between Delhi and Mumbai from about 33 hours to about 12 hours.

Railway: Fast trains, Less Time of Travel

New generation trains and special high-speed corridors are saving a lot of time in rail travel. The railway timetable for 2026 reflects this change, with 549 trains being increased across the network. Of these, 20 trains became faster by 60 minutes or more. The timing of 48 other trains was reduced by 31-59 minutes, while the timing of 105 trains was reduced by 16-30 minutes. The speed of remaining 376 trains was increased by 5-15 minutes.

New generation of trains

  • Vande India express, New Delhi–Varanasi (February, 2019)

40-50% faster than legacy services

India's first Vande Bharat 15 February 2019 It was started on the New Delhi-Kanpur-Prayagraj-Varanasi corridor. The scheduled travel time between New Delhi and Varanasi is about eight hours, making it about 40-50% faster than earlier services on this route.

  • Vande India express, area–Srinagar (june, 2025)

Saving 2-3 hours

This train covered the Katra-Srinagar journey. About Three hours Has done. Service extended to Jammu-Srinagar, now this journey 4 hours 50 minutes Completes in.

  • Vande India express, Banaras–Khajuraho (november, 2025)

~2 hours 40 minutes savings

This train saves approximately 2 hours 40 minutes as compared to the special trains running earlier.

  • Vande India express, Ernakulam –Bengaluru (november, 2025)

Saving more than 2 hours

This service to travel 8 hours 40 minutes This cuts the travel time by more than two hours.  

  • Vande India express, Lucknow–Saharanpur (november, 2025)

saving about 1 hour

This train is almost 7 hours 45 minutes Completes the journey in.

  • Vande India sleeper, Howrah–Guwahati (January, 2026)

~17 hours → ~14 hours

India's first Vande Bharat sleeper train compared to Saraighat Express About Three hours Saves. It has 16 air-conditioned coaches for approximately 823 passengers.

Hi–Speed Rail corridor

  • Mumbai–Ahmedabad Hi–Speed Rail corridor

8–9 hours by road → ~1 hour 58 minutes

508 kilometers Trains in this long corridor will run at a speed of 320 km/hour and will connect 12 stations. It also includes India's first undersea railway tunnel, which is approximately 7 kilometers long beneath Thane Creek. The first service is targeted to begin in August 2027.
