The Indian Navy’s Karwar base has received new residential housing, a KG school and trunk utility infrastructure. General NS Raja Subramani, Chief of Defence Staff and Secretary, Department of Military Affairs, inaugurated them on 08 Oct 2026 as part of Project Seabird Phase IIA.

The event was attended by VAdm Vivek Dahiya, Director General Seabird, and other senior officers.

What was opened

The facilities sit at East of Manzil Creek (EOMC) and Amadalli. They include:

  • One tower of 60 Dwelling Units (DUs) for married senior sailors
  • One tower of 60 DUs for naval defence civilians
  • In-living accommodation for 156 DSC personnel
  • A KG school

The residential buildings and their amenity facilities were built by M/s NCC Ltd, Hyderabad. M/s Cemindia Projects India Ltd built the trunk infrastructure.

Bigger plan for Karwar

The works support ongoing Phase IIA of Project Seabird, which will allow ships and submarines to be based at Karwar. The wider scope includes a dual-use Naval Air Station, a full-fledged Naval Dockyard and logistics facilities for ships and aircraft.

Once complete, the naval base will house about 10,000 uniformed and civilian personnel with their families. The authorities expect this to boost the local economy, industry and tourism. They also expect it to create many direct and indirect jobs in the Uttara Kannada region.

Green and domestic standards

The project follows norms set by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF & CC) and the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). On completion, it will be IGBC Gold rated.

The project also aligns with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat concept. Over 90% of its materials and equipment are sourced domestically.
