Prime Minister Narendra Modi told members of the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) that technology must drive inclusive and sustainable development. He met the board at Seva Teerth ahead of the India Mobile Congress.
Access and the digital divide
Modi said no section of society should be left behind. He stressed making technology and digital services affordable and accessible, especially for the Global South.
He said technology must reach the last mile to stop the digital divide from widening.
Modi also pointed to Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) as a transformative force for developing countries. He said his talks with several world leaders showed its growing global relevance. Such platforms, he said, can act as a springboard for Global South countries.
Fraud, deepfakes and global rules
Modi said digital and cyber fraud needs technology-driven solutions. He suggested regular awareness messages to warn users about possible fraud calls.
He also called for global standards and common rules for emerging technologies. On deepfakes and AI-generated content, he suggested exploring ways for users to quickly identify where such content came from.
Board sees India as a global leader
GSMA board members said India has emerged as a global leader in digital and mobile connectivity. They pointed to the rapid expansion of 4G and 5G, the scale of digital public infrastructure, and the growth of the telecom and mobile manufacturing ecosystem.
They praised India’s investment-friendly policy framework. They also stressed that secure, resilient and trusted digital infrastructure is key to continued digital growth.
The board members identified growing scope for international cooperation with India in 5G, 6G, AI, cybersecurity, digital inclusion and satellite connectivity.
Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and Minister of State for Communications Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar attended the meeting, along with senior Government of India officials.
