Kolkata, October 7, 2026

Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPA)—formerly Kolkata Port Trust —together with the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), hosted the Balagarh Road Show for development of Extended Port Gate System (EPGS) at Balagarh, in the city today, to present one of eastern India’s most significant port opportunities.
Shri Subrata Gupta, Advisor to Chief Minister, Government of West Bengal, Shri Suvendu Adhikari was the Chief Guest. Shri Rathendra Raman, Chairman, SMP Kolkata welcomed him.
The programme was attended by major trade partners including ADANI, JSW Infrastructure, IWAI and leading logistics companies. Dy. Chairman and other senior officers of SMP Kolkata were present.
On this occasion, Shri Rathendra Raman, Chairman, SMP Kolkata said, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji had recently laid the foundation stone for the IWT Terminal and Road Over Bridge at Balagarh. He added, the project will decongest Kolkata Dock System (KDS) and being waterways-based, it will be environment friendly and sustainable. The project cost is Rs. 538.20 crore with a capacity of 2.7 MTPA and is located 85 km upstream of KDS on National Waterway-1.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri Subrata Gupta said, Balagarh is a unique example of Centre-State coordination. He said, the rail, road and waterways connectivity is being provided by the Central Government, while industrial land is being made available by the State Government. He also mentioned about the environment clearance obtained and stated that the coordination between Central and State Governments for this project will be very helpful for trade, industry and West Bengal.
