India won 21 gold medals at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, and finished with 85 medals overall. The Games ran from September 19 to October 4, 2026.
Archery, shooting and boxing drive the gold count
Archery topped India’s gold tally with five titles. Shooting and boxing won three golds each.
Cricket, hockey and kabaddi added two gold medals apiece. Wrestling won two more, while athletics and golf took one each.
The men’s cricket team beat Pakistan by 19 runs in the final. The men’s hockey team retained its continental title with a 5-1 win over Malaysia. Gold also came in both the men’s and women’s kabaddi competitions.

Large squad with many first-timers
India sent a 501-athlete contingent across 36 sporting disciplines. More than 300 of them were making their Asian Games debut.
Before leaving, the team had a send-off in New Delhi on September 8, 2026. Union Minister Dr Mandaviya, IOA President Dr P.T. Usha and Chef de Mission Sahdev Yadav attended, and the contingent jersey was unveiled.
At the opening ceremony on September 19, double Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker and kabaddi player Pawan Sehrawat led India’s parade.
Para Games and the policy push
Japan hosts the 5th Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya from October 18 to 24, 2026. India will take part through the Paralympic Committee of India. This will be its fifth appearance.
At Hangzhou 2022, India won a record 111 medals, including 29 gold. The Government launched Khelo Bharat Niti on July 1, 2025. The Union Budget 2026-27 allocated a record Rs 4,479.88 crore to the sports ministry.
