An Indian parliamentary delegation has left for Arusha in the United Republic of Tanzania to attend the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). The team departed from New Delhi on 3 October 2026.

The Assembly and related meetings run from 5 to 9 October 2026. Parliamentarians from across the world will discuss good governance and empowering communities through inclusivity, trust and opportunities for all.

Who is going

Harivansh, Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha, leads the delegation. The team has nine members from both Houses of Parliament:

Role in the meetings

The delegation will take part in a wide range of meetings, panel discussions and workshops on issues of global relevance. It will put forward India’s views on these matters.

Harivansh will sit in the Governing Council and speak in the General Debate. He will also take part in the debate on the emergency item and the hearing with candidates for IPU President.

Issues on the agenda

Members will join discussions on democracy and human rights, peace and international security, and sustainable development. Women’s participation, science and technology, and counter-terrorism are also on the list.

Health, mental health, critical minerals, artificial intelligence and the future of work will come up as well. So will maritime security, climate change and the protection of mountain and ocean ecosystems.

The government said the delegation’s participation reflects India’s continued engagement with the IPU. It also shows India’s commitment to parliamentary diplomacy and cooperation among parliaments.
