Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched a tree plantation drive in Ahmedabad on Sunday, 12 July 2026, and opened 101 Oxygen Parks. The city’s civic body also unveiled projects worth around Rs 405 crore.

Campaign and projects

Shah started the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s Mission Five Million Trees campaign. The Corporation is the city’s civic body.

He inaugurated 22 development projects and laid foundation stones for seven more. The Corporation opened 101 Oxygen Parks to protect the environment.

Key numbers

  • Nearly 50 lakh saplings planted across Ahmedabad city as part of the drive
  • Over 3.61 lakh saplings planted in one hour using the Miyawaki method, which officials said set a Guinness World Record
  • Development projects worth Rs 28,492 crore completed so far in the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency, Shah said

Green targets and pledges

Shah set a goal of raising green cover in the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency from 11.23 per cent to 20 per cent.

He said the campaign could bring Ahmedabad’s temperature down by at least five per cent in the coming years. Making both cities green, he said, depends on people taking part.

Memorandums of understanding were signed. Shah said 1,37,812 citizens from the Gandhinagar constituency and 28,544 from Ahmedabad’s other constituencies pledged to plant five trees each in their housing societies.

The drive is linked to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign. Shah said it has grown into a nationwide movement for environmental protection.

Plantation events were held at several sites. These included a drive in Thaltej Ward at the Corporation’s plot on the Gota-Godhavi Canal in Bhadaj, and the Sabarmati Ashram Gaushala plot run by the National Dairy Development Board.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel attended the event. Mayor Hitesh Barot, Municipal Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani and City BJP President Prerak Shah were also present.

What comes next

A separate campaign to plant 50 lakh trees across Ahmedabad’s three Lok Sabha constituencies is under way, Shah said. The civic body has also started a special vehicle service to deliver saplings to residents’ homes.
