The National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) received Rs 9.68 crore from users of India’s biological resources between April and September 2026. Rs 9.56 crore of that came as access fees from various sectors.
Seed and food sectors bring in most money
The Agri-seed sector gave the largest share, Rs 7.16 crore. Food and Beverages followed with Rs 1.59 crore, and Animal Husbandry with Rs 62.01 lakh.
Receipts under IPR-related applications came to Rs 11.24 lakh. Other receipts came from AYUSH, Red Sanders wood and Cosmetics.

Biggest payers
East West Seeds India Ltd was the largest ABS contributor, with around Rs 2.01 crore across multiple payments. Its payments came in several instalments.
The single largest payment was Rs 1.17 crore from Synergia Life Science Ltd. Tata Chemicals Pvt Ltd paid Rs 52.06 lakh, and Indena India Pvt Ltd Rs 45.89 lakh.
Grow Indigo Ltd paid Rs 45.79 lakh, Novozymes South Asia Rs 44.11 lakh, and Nongwoo Seed India Rs 40.53 lakh. Nunhems India Ltd made upfront payments of around Rs 1.64 crore.
Contributions came from domestic and international entities. The foreign entities were from Sri Lanka, Germany, France, the Republic of Korea and Bhutan.
Resources used across sectors
The receipts reflect use of biological resources in agriculture, food, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medicinal plants, microorganisms and livestock. Crops include chickpea, red lentil, green moong, flaxseed, brinjal and okra.
Medicinal plants include Ashwagandha, Shatavari, Kalmegh, Arjuna and Moringa. Soil microorganisms include Azospirillum, Rhizobium and Trichoderma.
Livestock genetic resources include Mithun, Jersey cattle and frozen semen of Murrah buffalo. Red Sanders wood from cultivated sources and auctioned material is also covered.
Funds go back into conservation
Since 2008, the NBA has realised around Rs 278 crore through ABS. It has disbursed more than Rs 200 crore for biodiversity conservation and benefits to communities, farmers, institutions and other benefit claimers.
Funds disbursed through State Biodiversity Boards and Union Territory Biodiversity Councils support conservation and People’s Biodiversity Registers. They also strengthen Biodiversity Management Committees and fund biodiversity research and documentation.
The NBA said the receipts reflect continued implementation of India’s ABS framework. They also show users of biological resources meeting their benefit-sharing obligations.
