The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has earned a Guinness World Record after planting 3.61 lakh saplings in a single hour. Officials received the certificate for the feat on Sunday, 12 July.
How the drive unfolded
The planting took place at Bhadaj locality in Ahmedabad, near Satvam Heights, beside the Gota Godhavi Canal. The site falls in the Thaltej Ward of the North West Zone.
The AMC used the Miyawaki method to plant the saplings. Around 35 native tree species went into the ground, and more than 25,000 volunteers joined the effort.
Figures for the area differ between accounts. One estimate puts the campaign at about 91,006 square metres, with planting across 76,000 square metres.
Shah hails the milestone
Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah, who is also the Gandhinagar MP, congratulated the city on X. He called the achievement a “monumental milestone” and linked it to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Progress with Nature.
Shah said the record was an outstanding example of public participation, meticulous planning and society’s commitment to environmental conservation.
Harsh Sanghavi also congratulated the AMC and the volunteers on X. He said every sapling planted that day was a promise of a greener tomorrow.
Part of a wider green drive
The Ahmedabad drive is one part of a larger tree plantation campaign across the entire Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency. Known as the Hariyali Lok Sabha initiative, it was inspired by Amit Shah.
According to reports, 1,37,812 citizens of Gandhinagar Lok Sabha alone pledged to plant five trees each in their societies.
Next targets
The constituency has a target of planting 1.25 crore trees. The AMC has committed to planting 50 lakh trees. One Gujarati report puts the Gandhinagar figure at 1.26 crore.
Shah has also set a goal to raise the greenery share in Gandhinagar Lok Sabha from 11.23 per cent to 20 per cent, according to a Gujarati report.
