Financial support for higher education and research can play an important role in helping students from disadvantaged communities access higher education, overcoming economic barriers, and contributing to scientific progress. A timely fellowship can provide students with the financial stability they need to focus on research and pursue their academic aspirations.

35 year old Mr Balamurugan S. Devendra Kula belongs to the Vellalar community and is a beneficiary of the Scheduled Caste category. He is currently working as a guest lecturer in Physics. He is the first in his family to graduate and the only one in his family generations to obtain a doctoral degree. Although higher education was an achievable goal for him, financial difficulties were a major challenge for further studies and scientific research.

The support under the National Fellowship provided Mr. Balamurugan with the financial support he needed to fully commit to his research. During the fellowship period from 2017 to 2020, he received financial assistance of Rs 25 thousand every month in the first two years and Rs 31 thousand every month in the next two years. The fellowship provided significant support in specialized research involving chemicals and advanced techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), antimicrobial studies and magnetic studies.

With the assistance of the fellowship, Mr. Balamurugan successfully completed his research and fulfilled his aspiration of making a fundamental contribution to the scientific community. He wrote and published a research paper on “Cadmium Oxide Nanopowders”. They call this the world's first research paper on this subject. The fellowship support also contributed to his continued research work and enabled him to publish 28 international research papers.

The National Fellowship significantly contributed to the academic and research journey of Shri Balamurugan. This helped them overcome financial limitations and pursue higher education with more focus and confidence. His achievement as the only person in his family's generation to earn a doctoral degree has been a significant milestone for his family as well.

Mr. Balamurugan said, “Receiving the National Fellowship gave me the necessary support to fully dedicate myself to scientific research. It helped me complete my research and publish 28 international research papers.”

Sri Balamurugan S. ’s journey shows that financial support for higher education and research can enable talented students from disadvantaged communities to pursue higher education, conduct scientific research and contribute to the broader academic community. His experience illustrates the role of fellowship support in creating opportunities for higher education, scientific progress, and greater self-reliance.
