Union Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy Shri Shripad Yesso Naik represented India at the Energy Ministers' Meeting at the 20th East Asia Summit held in Manila, Philippines today. In his address on the occasion, Shri Naik underlined India's commitment towards regional energy cooperation, energy security and a secure, efficient, affordable and sustainable energy future.
Emphasizing India's Act East Policy and Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with ASEAN, the Union Minister welcomed the ASEAN Plan of Action 2026-2030 for Energy Cooperation and emphasized cooperation under the ASEAN-India Plan of Action 2026-2030, including on ASEAN Power Grid, regional power transmission, multilateral electricity trade, clean energy and energy security. He also mentioned that Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi had announced to support the ASEAN Power Grid Initiative through training 400 professionals under grid connectivity during the 22nd ASEAN-India Summit to be held in 2025.
Shri Naik highlighted the remarkable progress made in India's power sector. He informed that by September 30, 2026, the installed power generation capacity of the country has reached 558.8 GW. Of this, 308 GW capacity is from non-fossil fuel sources, which is 55 percent of the total installed capacity. On regional interconnections, Shri Naik said India and Singapore are considering options for the proposed 2,000 MW cross-border power interconnection. One of the options under consideration is an approximately 3,000 km long land-based transmission corridor that will connect India's Imphal to Singapore via Myanmar, Thailand and Malaysia. The scheme has the potential to facilitate reliable cross-border electricity trade, promote clean energy integration and strengthen regional energy security.
Shri Naik expressed his desire to share India's experience in widespread use of renewable energy, grid integration, transmission planning, energy storage, green hydrogen and clean energy technologies with EAS member countries. He also called for strengthening institutional relations between Indian institutions and ASEAN Energy Centre, including NTPC, POWERGRID, CEA, NIWE, NISE and NPTI.
Shri Naik outlined opportunities for cooperation on strategic petroleum reserves, emergency preparedness, power system resilience, LNG and gas supply security, renewable energy forecasting, battery energy storage, green hydrogen and other emerging energy technologies.
