  • DRDO carried out the first live jump of the Advanced High-Altitude Parachute
  • The jump started at 16,000 feet above mean sea level
  • The parachute opened at 15,500 feet; landing was at 13,700 feet
  • AHAP is designed by ADRDE, Agra, and built by Ordnance Parachute Factory Kanpur
  • Officials said the test proved the parachute works at extreme high altitudes

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has carried out the first live jump of its Advanced High-Altitude Parachute (AHAP). The jump took place at Nyoma (Mudh DZ), one of the highest drop zones.

Jump details

Paratroopers jumped from 16,000 feet above mean sea level. The parachute opened at 15,500 feet above mean sea level. The landing was at Nyoma (Mudh DZ), at 13,700 feet.

The test showed that the AHAP can be used tactically at extremely high-altitude terrain.

Built for high-altitude operations

Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE), Agra, designed the AHAP. It is a static line parachute system meant for mass drops of paratroopers.

Ordnance Parachute Factory (OPF) Kanpur manufactured the system. DGAQA inspected it, and CEMILAC, RCMA Kanpur, certified it.

The parachute offers several deployment modes. Its operational range goes up to 18,000 feet, and it has one of the safest rates of descent. Static line jumps at such heights are complex and risky, because the opening shock is very high and the descent is fast.

Officials hail the milestone

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Defence Forces, DPSUs and industry on the successful jump. He said it was another big step towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

Defence Secretary and Secretary, Department of Defence R&D, and DRDO Chairman Rajesh Kumar Singh congratulated the team behind the system’s design and development.
