President Droupadi Murmu conferred degrees on 92 students at AIIMS Bilaspur’s first convocation. The ceremony marked the first graduating batch of the institute, a major step for its growth and its role in medical education and healthcare.
A message to the first batch
Murmu praised the graduates, the gold medallists, and the parents, guardians and teachers who had supported them. She said the first batch has a special role in shaping the institute’s identity and legacy.
She asked the graduates to protect the institute’s name through their conduct, commitment and service. Medicine, she said, carries a duty towards humanity.
Murmu asked them to keep people in remote areas, with little access to specialised care, at the centre of their work. She urged the institute to strengthen tertiary healthcare in the region through telemedicine, expert consultations, training and modern technology.
Health cover and lifelong learning
Murmu pointed to Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, which gives eligible poor families health cover of ₹5 lakh a year. She said more than ₹2 lakh crore has been spent on treatment under the scheme.
She asked stakeholders to make sure people in far-flung areas know about these benefits. She also called on leading institutions such as AIIMS to build basic, low-cost healthcare solutions.
Murmu told the graduates to keep learning as medical practice changes. She asked them to turn research into innovation that improves lives, and said medicine is about compassion and trust as much as science and technology.
Medical education on the rise
Nadda said the number of medical colleges has risen from 384 to over 800. Undergraduate medical seats have grown from 51,348 to 1.42 lakh.
He said the government aims to add 75,000 undergraduate and postgraduate medical seats by 2029. Of these, ₹15,000 crore has been allocated for 10,000 additional MBBS and PG seats.
Nadda credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for the expansion of AIIMS. He said the country had only one AIIMS for several decades, but 16 new ones have been set up in the last 12 years.
AIIMS Bilaspur’s growth
Nadda said the institute has grown beyond its initial target of 750 beds and now has 776. Its 26 specialties and 15 super specialties are fully functional.
He said complex surgery, cardiac catheterisation, neurosurgery, cancer care and radiotherapy have all been introduced in the last five years. He added that OPD consultations have crossed 12 lakh and IPD admissions have crossed 1 lakh over the last four years.
Nadda praised the faculty and staff for the institute’s pace of development. He urged the graduates to uphold its reputation and said he was confident it would soon match any other AIIMS in the country.
Himachal Pradesh Governor Kavinder Gupta congratulated the graduates. He said the institute is bringing specialised care closer to people in Himachal Pradesh and neighbouring states, especially remote and tribal areas.
Gupta recalled Prime Minister Modi’s remarks at the institute’s inauguration. He said the graduates could help build a Viksit Bharat through their skills and service.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu sent his best wishes to the graduates and the institute. Harsh Mahajan, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, Lt Gen (Dr.) Daljit Singh (Retd.), Executive Director, AIIMS Bilaspur, and Prof. (Dr.) Narendra Kumar Arora, President, AIIMS Bilaspur, also attended.
