- India is exploring a proposed 2,000 MW cross-border power interconnection with Singapore.
- The route is a land-based corridor of about 3,000 km, from Imphal through Myanmar, Thailand and Malaysia.
- Installed generation capacity reached 558.8 GW as on 30 September 2026.
- Non-fossil capacity stands at 308 GW, 55% of total installed capacity.
- About 5.01 million rooftop solar installations under PM Surya Ghar benefit 5.95 million households.
India has proposed a 2,000 MW cross-border power link with Singapore. Union Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik put the idea before the 20th East Asia Summit Energy Ministers’ Meeting in Manila, Philippines.
Power link through Southeast Asia
Naik said India and Singapore are studying options for the interconnection. One option under study is a land-based transmission corridor of about 3,000 km, from Imphal in India to Singapore via Myanmar, Thailand and Malaysia.
The link could support reliable cross-border electricity trade, bring in more clean energy and strengthen regional energy security, he said.
He also backed the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation 2026–2030 and the ASEAN India Plan of Action 2026–2030. Both cover the ASEAN Power Grid, regional transmission, multilateral power trade and clean energy. He recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement at the 22nd ASEAN India Summit in 2025 to train 400 professionals on grid connectivity.
India’s power and solar figures
Naik said installed electricity generation capacity reached 558.8 GW as on 30 September 2026. Of this, 308 GW is non-fossil capacity, or 55% of the total.
He said PM Surya Ghar has brought about 5.01 million rooftop solar installations, benefiting 5.95 million households as on 29 September 2026.
India reached 50% of cumulative installed capacity from non-fossil sources in June 2025. That was five years ahead of its 2030 NDC target, he noted.
Offer to share expertise and deepen ties
Naik said India is ready to share its experience in large-scale renewable deployment, grid integration, transmission planning, energy storage, green hydrogen and clean energy technologies with EAS countries.
He called for closer institutional links between the ASEAN Centre for Energy and Indian bodies, including NTPC, POWERGRID, CEA, NIWE, NISE and NPTI.
He also pointed to cooperation on strategic petroleum reserves, emergency preparedness, grid resilience, LNG and gas supply security, renewable forecasting and battery storage. India is also keen on knowledge exchange on CCUS and the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme, he said, taking into account the priorities of participating countries.
Naik reaffirmed India’s support for ASEAN’s effort to operationalise the Enhanced Memorandum of Understanding on the ASEAN Power Grid and deepen multilateral power trade.
