Onion prices are easing across India, with 126 cities reporting retail drops of ₹1-21 per kg in two weeks. Fresh supplies are rising ahead of the festive season.
Fresh Kharif supplies gain pace
Fresh Kharif onion arrivals have started from major producing States, including Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan. Stored stocks are still meeting demand, and arrivals are expected to rise in the coming weeks.
All-India Kharif onion acreage is estimated to be about 5 per cent higher than last year. Crop conditions remain favourable in major producing regions.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast no excessive rain in key Kharif onion regions in the coming weeks. That should help harvesting, drying and movement of onions, and lower the risk of moisture damage.
Mandi and retail prices fall
The weighted average mandi price in Maharashtra fell nearly 13 per cent. It dropped from about ₹4,030 per quintal on 16 September to about ₹3,475 per quintal on 3 October.
Retail prices are also easing. Moderation has been seen in Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal. The official view is that the fall reflects better supply across the country, not just a few markets.
Buffer stock moves to cities
The government has disposed of more than 2.0 lakh quintals of buffer onion. It used 8 Kanda Express and 467 trucks across 123 cities.
It plans to deploy additional rail rakes to move larger quantities to high-consumption markets. The government says it is monitoring arrivals, stocks and prices closely.
Officials expect the supply position to stay well supported and prices to moderate further.
