A joint Indian and Argentine Army mountaineering team has summited two Himalayan peaks, Mt Abi Gamin and Mt Kamet. General Dhiraj Seth, Chief of the Army Staff, was in New Delhi with the members of the expedition.

Two peaks climbed in September

The team reached the 7,355-metre summit of Mt Abi Gamin on 17 September. It climbed Mt Kamet, at 7,756 metres, on 21 September 2026.

Mt Kamet is in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand. It is the third-highest peak in India, after Mt Kanchenjunga and Mt Nanda Devi.

Team and route

The 35-member expedition was led by Lieutenant Colonel Chirag Chatterjee. It includes 25 personnel from the Indian Army and 10 from the Argentine Army.

The team left the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi on 21 August 2026. The climbers faced extreme cold, high winds, snowfields, steep rock, crevasses and other high-altitude hazards.

Earlier joint expeditions

This is the third mountaineering venture between the two armies. The earlier two were to Mt Aconcagua (6,962 metres) in Mendoza, Argentina, in January 2025, and Mt Kun (7,077 metres) in the Suru Valley, Ladakh, in August 2025.

The armies say these expeditions have built professional cooperation, interoperability and mutual trust. They also gave personnel experience of working together at high altitude.
