A 4.2-magnitude earthquake shook Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district at 8:07 pm on Saturday, sending frightened residents running out of their homes.
Where it struck
The National Center for Seismology put the epicentre about 2 km north-west of Uttarkashi town, at a depth of 11 km. The quake was recorded at 8:07:30 pm.
Strong tremors were felt in the district headquarters and across the Yamunotri valley. Residents said television sets and household items shook as the ground moved, and many stepped out into the streets.
No damage so far
The district administration said its first assessment found no loss of life or damage to property anywhere in the district.
Second jolt in days
Earlier on Saturday, a smaller 2.8-magnitude quake was recorded in Bageshwar district, according to the National Center for Seismology.
On 6 October, a 4.9-magnitude earthquake centred in Chamoli district shook Uttarakhand, and tremors were felt as far as Delhi-NCR.
A quake-prone region
Uttarakhand lies in the Himalayan belt, one of the most earthquake-prone regions of India. Uttarkashi was hit by a major earthquake in 1991.
During tremors, disaster management authorities advise people to drop, take cover under sturdy furniture and hold on, and to stay away from windows and heavy objects.
