Record chase: West Indies beat India by six wickets in Ranchi

The result levels the five-match series 1-1 and ends Shreyas Iyer's run of 10 consecutive wins as India captain. West Indies reached 252/4 in 18.3 overs.

West Indies chased down 250 to beat India by six wickets with nine balls remaining in Ranchi on October 9. The result levelled the five-match Twenty20 series at 1-1.

A record-breaking chase

The match was played at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi. India posted 249/5 in 20 overs. West Indies replied with 252/4 in 18.3 overs.

Captain Shai Hope smashed 102 off 45 balls, his second T20I hundred. Sherfane Rutherford added 84 off 37 balls.

It was West Indies’ highest successful T20I chase. It was also the highest successful chase against India. The two teams scored 501 runs between them.

India’s innings

India’s total was built on Sanju Samson’s 82 off 41 balls. Ishan Kishan scored 43, Shreyas Iyer 40 and Tilak Varma 44.

Iyer on the defeat

Speaking after the match, Iyer said the dew factor made it difficult to work out a safe total. It also left little margin for error. He credited the West Indies batters for their performance.

The defeat also ended Iyer’s run of 10 consecutive wins as India captain.

Series background

The first T20I, at Lucknow, was won by India by eight wickets. Iyer scored 102 not out off 43 balls in that match.

Before the Ranchi game, Hope won the toss and chose to field first. India therefore batted first under the lights.
