TVK won both Tamil Nadu Assembly bypolls on Friday, lifting its tally to 110 seats. The bypolls were held in Madurantakam and Dharapuram, and polling took place on Tuesday, 6 October 2026.
Dharapuram went down to the wire
P Sathyabama won Dharapuram by 9,645 votes. The race swung back and forth. At one point, AIADMK moved into first place.
Sathyabama then built a clear lead. Near the close of the 20th round, she was ahead by 10,003 votes. She finished with a margin of 9,645. The DMK’s S. Suganya was the runner-up.
Maragatham Kumaravel wins Madurantakam
K. Maragatham Kumaravel won Madurantakam with 67,825 votes. The DMK, led by I. Paranthamen, came second in the seat.
Preliminary turnout was 83.86 per cent in Madurantakam and 78.53 per cent in Dharapuram.
Still short of a majority
The two seats take TVK to 110 in the 234-member Assembly. A simple majority needs 118 seats, so the party is still eight short.
Both winners were elected on AIADMK tickets in the 2026 Assembly elections, held five months ago. They later switched to TVK and resigned their seats to contest the bypolls. Sathyabama had resigned from Dharapuram on 25 May 2026 to join TVK.
