A 4.2 magnitude earthquake shook Uttarkashi district in Uttarakhand at 8:07 pm on Saturday night. People rushed out of their homes as the tremors hit.
Where the epicentre was
According to the National Center for Seismology, the epicentre was about 2 km north-west of Uttarkashi town, 11 km below the surface. The quake was recorded at 8:07:30 pm.
Strong tremors were felt at the district headquarters and in the Yamunotri valley. Residents said TV sets and other items kept in homes started shaking, and many came out onto the roads.
No damage reported
The district administration said that, in its initial assessment, no loss of life or property has been reported from anywhere in the district.
Second tremor in days
According to the National Center for Seismology, a mild 2.8 magnitude earthquake was earlier recorded in Bageshwar district on Saturday.
On October 6, a 4.9 magnitude quake with its epicentre in Chamoli district shook Uttarakhand, and tremors were felt as far as Delhi-NCR.
Seismically sensitive region
Uttarakhand lies in the Himalayan region, one of the most earthquake-prone areas in the country. Uttarkashi was hit by a major earthquake in 1991.
The disaster management department advises that when tremors are felt, people should take cover under a sturdy table or furniture, protect their heads, and stay away from windows and heavy objects.
