A two-minute video of garbage being dumped on a road is being shared online with claims that it shows an attempt to stop protesters reaching Jantar Mantar in Delhi. Fact-checks trace the footage to Panipat, Haryana, where sanitation workers dumped waste during a protest on August 17.
What the clip shows
Fact-checks say the footage shows sanitation workers dumping garbage during a protest over pending demands in Panipat. The protest took place on August 17.
One check names the spot as Samvidhan Chowk in Panipat. Another places it on GT Road in Panipat, matching shops visible in the clip.
The false claim
Social media users have shared the clip with the claim that Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta deliberately dumped garbage on the roads to keep protesters out of Jantar Mantar. One post asked: “Whose Idea was it to scatter Garbage to stop the protesters at Jantar Mantar.”
Some users have also shared it as an attempt by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to block protesters. The clip does not show a Delhi protest. The Panipat protest is separate from the October 10 event in Delhi.
Delhi on high alert
The claims spread around a protest in Delhi on October 10, led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). Delhi was on high alert, with heavy security and a strong police presence. Authorities closed 57 metro stations and halted several trains.
